James G. Lyon, M.S.W., M.P.H. is Associate Professor Emeritus, Office of Medical Education and Research, College of Human Medicine. He joined the Department of Radiology in February 2001 on a part-time basis where he assists in writing manuscripts, in promoting research efforts, and coordinating selected administrative activities. Jim began his working career as an x-ray technician in Grand Rapids, MI while earning his baccalaureate degree in Sociology/English at Aquinas College (1957). He obtained an M.S.W. degree from Michigan State University (1960) and subsequently became the founding director of the Medical Social Services Department at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. While there, he became involved in outpatient clinic administration and earned a M.P.H. degree in medical care administration from The University of Michigan (1969). In 1969, Jim was recruited to Michigan State University by the College of Human Medicine (CHM) as an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Office of Regional Medical Programs (heart, cancer, and stroke). He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1976 with tenure. Between 1973 and his retirement in 1999, he held several positions in the CHM Dean's Office, including Director of Alumni and Associate Dean for Operations and Finance. He was very active with the community-based medical education corporations. He served under Founding Dean Andrew D. Hunt, Dean W. Donald Weston, and Dean William Abbett. In 1998, he was presented the CHM Lester J. Evans. M.D. Distinguished Service Award. Nationally, Jim was active in U.S. medical school accreditation surveys, serving as an AMA-appointed team secretary for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education Survey Teams. Internationally, he has served as a consultant to the medical schools in the United Arab Emirates (1992-96). After his retirement in 1999, Jim was retained by CHM to coordinate and complete its "institutional self-study" for accreditation.
