MSU College of Human Medicine, a community-based medical school, established a clinical campus in Grand Rapids in 1971. The Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center for Health Professions (MERC) is the administrative unit of this campus and houses its Assistant Dean as well as several full-time faculty members and residency program directors. MERC is responsible for the coordination of all medical and health professions related education in the greater Grand Rapids area.
The Grand Rapids Campus annually accommodates 60 third and fourth year MSU medical students, plus varying numbers of students from other medical schools. The students take required clerkships in the Grand Rapids hospitals. In addition, approximately 50 specialty and subspecialty elective clerkships, including research, are available.
Spectrum Health Downtown Campus is a 520-bed non-profit acute care teaching hospital which admits more than 27,000 patients annually. It serves as a Level I Trauma Center and the High Risk OB Referral Center for West Michigan.

More than 40,000 patients are seen in the Emergency Department and 19,000 in the Ambulatory Care Department each year. Spectrum Health Downtown has an active medical staff of over 300 physicians.
Spectrum Health East Campus is a 410 bed non-profit acute care teaching hospital with an active medical staff of 240 physicians. There are more than 18,000 admissions annually.

Emergency room visits number about 37,000 per year; there are approximately 14,000 clinic visits. Spectrum Health East houses the West Michigan Burn Unit, an Arthritis Institute which focuses on reconstructive surgery and Michigans only Regional Poison Control Center outside of Detroit.
Saint Marys Mercy Medical Center, a non-profit 300-bed acute care teaching hospital, has more than 200 attending physicians on the active staff. The hospital admits over 16,000 patients annually, and its Family Health Center and Comprehensive Health Center record 34,500 visits each year.
