INTEGRATED INSTITUTIONS
Three community teaching hospitals are involved in the MSU/MERC Diagnostic Radiology residency: Spectrum Health Downtown Campus , Spectrum Health East Campus, and Saint Marys Mercy Medical Center. There are 28 board-certified radiologists collectively staffing Spectrum Health, and 10 board-certified radiologists staffing Saint Mary's Mercy Medical Center.
At Spectrum Health Downtown, board-certified radiologists staff the Diagnostic Radiology Department which performs an average of 138,000 procedures per year. Special procedures include MRI, interventional radiology, angiography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, CT scanning, and pediatric radiology. Spectrum Health Downtown is the Major Trauma Center.
Spectrum Health Easts Diagnostic Radiology Department performs an average of 110,000 diagnostic exams per year, including CT and MRI scanning, nuclear medicine with computerized gamma camera, angiography, and ultrasound. The West Michigan Regional Burn Center is located at Spectrum Health East.
Saint Marys board-certified radiologists provide resident training in general radiology, interventional radiology and angiography, CT and MRI scanning, nuclear medicine, mammography and ultrasound. Average yearly diagnostic radiology procedures number over 120,000. Saint Marys is the West Michigan Renal Transplant Center. In 1983, the hospital opened the regions first Diagnostic Breast Center.
In addition to the three community teaching hospitals, the MSU Department of Radiology in East Lansing provides teaching, radiological services, and other academic support. Residents spend one day per week at MSU for didactic teaching sessions and conferences which focus on film interpretation, differential diagnosis and physics. In addition, MSU serves as a primary site for magnetic resonance and imaging. Grand Rapids augments the MRI experience with fixed and mobile MRI units.
An active Visiting Professor program sponsored by the MSU Department of Radiology provides additional teaching and an opportunity to meet with many distinguished faculty from nationally prominent institutions. In addition, the American College of Radiology Teaching Film File and Videodisc series are available for resident use at MSU in East Lansing and at MERC in Grand Rapids.
The MERC operated Peter C. And Pat Cook Research Institute provides additional research and educational support to citywide training programs and healthcare professionals. Programs are designed to enhance clinical and outcomes based research, prevent disease, and move the community toward a better quality of life.
Philosophically, the residency goal is to produce well-trained, competent radiologists who are committed to continued excellence in their chosen fields, whether in academic radiology or private practice.
