Bone Densitometer upgrade
May 2001, East Lansing, MI
The MSU Hologic DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorption)
bone density scanner has been upgraded with a "C" arm attachment. This attachment
will allow both Frontal and Lateral Lumbar
Spine
evaluations without repositioning of the patient. The "C" arm also allows
for improved accuracy of scanning. This is expected to be especially valuable
in elderly patients or patients with conditions that limit motion.
Bone Densitometry provides an accurate assessment of the bone mineral density allowing the diagnosis of Osteopenia (decreased bone mass) a precoursor of Osteoporosis, and Osteoporosis, a significant loss of bone mass putting a patient at risk for fracture.
Risk factors for osteoporosis include:
-
Increasing age
-
Post-menopausal state
-
Small thin stature
-
Limited exercise.
Referrals from physicians are being accepted daily for this service.
