The
ADDM and CADDRE Programs
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center
on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities have awarded
a series of multi-year cooperative agreements to states or their
designated entities to establish autism surveillance programs, the
Autism
and
Developmental
Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDM), and the Centers of Excellence
for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Research and Epidemiology
(CADDRE). Currently there are six funded CADDRE sites and sixteen
funded ADDM projects.
MSU Data Coordinating Center’s role on the CDC ADDM & CADDRE
Programs
Currently the National
Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities of CDC (Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention) has
funded the MSU-DCC to serve as the data coordinating center for two
national studies of child autism spectrum disorders:
ADDM-CADDRE Surveillance Study
The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Network (ADDM)
aims to measure the number of cases of autism and other developmental
disabilities in different
regions of this country to provide accurate, population-based estimates
of the prevalence of these disabilities in young children. The
ADDM-CADDRE
study
network aims to identify the occurrences of ASDs in ~500,000 births within
catchment areas in 18 states.

CADDRE National Study
The CDC established six Centers of Excellence for Autism and
Developmental Disabilities Research and Epidemiology
(CADDRE) per the Children’s
Health Act of 2000. The six centers are executing a population-based
multi-site study (case-cohort design) to investigate potential
risk factors for Autism Spectrum Disorders. The study sample
size of
3-5 year olds in 24-month birth cohort will be larger than
other epidemiologic ASD investigations of the causes
of autism (~6000
individuals), and will involve detailed case assessment
of other accompanying symptoms and diseases. The study will
collect and
archive buccal (cheek) swabs, blood, and hair biosamples.
